It looks like game engine maker Unity is going to be laying off even more employees. Six months after putting 600 people out of work in the year’s third round of layoffs and announcing plans to close half its offices worldwide, the company said in its most recent quarterly financial report that despite a 69% year-over-year increase in revenue in its third quarter, it’s still bleeding money, and more people will probably have to go.

It hasn’t been going well at Unity for a good while now. In June 2022, Unity laid off at least 200 people, and in January 2023 nearly 300 more were put out of work. Things came to a head in September when the company announced a surprise new “Runtime Fee” that would charge developers on a per-install basis. The blowback was beyond furious, and just a month later longtime CEO John Riccitiello—in case you’d forgotten, the guy who’d enraged the world a year earlier by calling developers who don’t properly consider how to monetize their games “fucking idiots”—stepped down.

In a turn-up for the corporate books, even the infamously cut-throat Disney corporation has realised that it was just being way too shitty to a man suing it over the death of his wife at Disney World. Dr Kanokporn Tangsuan died in 2023 after a severe allergic reaction to food served at a restaurant in Disney World, Florida, despite warning the staff multiple times about her allergies. Her husband Jeffrey Piccolo launched a wrongful death lawsuit against Disney and the restaurant owners later in 2023.

It’s here that Disney’s lawyers step in, with one of the most truly amoral legal moves you’ll ever see. Piccolo’s suit includes reference to language used on the Disney website about the restaurant in question. Disney argued to the court that Piccolo could not sue the company over language on the website because, in 2019, he had signed up for a free trial of Disney+, as part of which he had agreed to the terms and conditions.

These terms and conditions, said Disney, included a clause saying users agree to settle any disputes with the company over any of its services via arbitration (a non-public process overseen by a neutral third party). From Disney’s court filing: “T…

Miklos Daniel Brody, a cloud engineer formerly employed at a bank, has been sentenced to two years in prison for “a network intrusion and for making false statements to a government agency” following a secret service investigation. Seemingly angered by his employer taking disciplinary action against him, Brody kept his work laptop under false pretences after being fired, and used his network access to damage his former employer’s internal IT systems.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California announced the news in a press release trumpeting the investigation (spotted by The Register), which contains some eye-popping details of Brody’s malfeasance. Brody pleaded guilty in April this year to the charges, which relate to both the First Republic Bank in San Francisco which employed him until March 11, 2020 and his subsequent behaviour when under investigation.

Brody had been flagged by the bank’s infosec team, which alleged he had plugged multiple USB devices into his company laptop and transferred various files including pornography. He was called into a meeting with the bank’s VP of human resources, during which Brody claimed that …

Four years ago Twitch permanently banned Dr. Disrespect, who at the time was one of the platform’s biggest and most recognisable stars. The Amazon-owned streaming platform has had various fallouts with high-profile users over the years, the difference being that when it comes to someone like xQc we know the reasons behind the split (in that case, lots of gambling). With Dr. Disrespect almost nothing is known about what caused such a breach, and the streamer’s subsequent choice to take legal action (settled in 2022) means everyone involved has stayed tight-lipped.

Dr. Disrespect has now spoken about the period of the ban on-stream (the timestamped video is below) and while he steers well clear of filling in any blanks, he makes it abundantly clear there’s no love lost between himself and Twitch. In response to a viewer asking about the prospect of any new music from the streamer in future, he answers:

Forspoken looked pretty good when we played it in late 2021, but a trailer that dropped in August 2022 left a very different and much less positive impression. Some of the edgy dialog, which commentators on Twitter have compared unfavorably to Joss Whedon, quickly dominated the conversation, while the PlayStation 5 reviews that began flowing yesterday found Forspoken to be, as PC Gamer features producer Mollie Taylor put it, “bullseye average.”

We don’t have our own Forspoken review up yet—no pre-release PC codes were offered for review, so Mollie is still working on it—but you can still get a sense of what it’s all about courtesy of the Forspoken demos that are now available on Steam, Epic, and the Microsoft Store.
